From the “Introduction”, by Don Pizarro:

“It seems fitting that fiction, one of the most time-honored ways of examining the complexity of human nature, also be applied to the examination of something as equally complex. Fiction about books in general has certainly been done before. Indeed, one might be tempted to dismiss this book about books, this Bibliotheca Fantastica, as an anthology of stories about Necronomicon knock-offs housed in spooky libraries, or of post-apocalyptic mutant book-worshippers living under St. Patrick’s Cathedral, or riffs on Borges’s Ficciones.

Yes, there are stories about books of power, and of libraries. There is a cathedral, and the name of Borges is invoked not once, but twice. But each of the stories in Bibliotheca Fantastica has, I believe, something unique to say about the importance of the book-as-artifact to those who shape them and to those who are shaped by them. These are stories in which the idea of a book and what it represents reaches beyond issues of form and function. Indeed, sometimes a book’s form is its function, and in this anthology the possibilities for both are limitless.”

We Choose Good + Affordable

https://i1.wp.com/blog.moonlightcreative.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/GoodFastCheap.jpg

You’ve probably heard this idea before: on any project, you can choose from a combination of good, fast, and cheap, but you can only pick two. Of course, no one wants to pick fast + cheap, because you end up with a low quality product. You can either throw a lot of money/staff/resources at the project, and rush something beautiful into the world, or you can spend your other asset – time.

We don’t have a lot of money at Dagan Books. We’re a small company with a small staff of volunteers and one publisher who wears a lot of hats. Accounting, promotions, data entry, communications, editing, proofing, typesetting, graphic design, project acquisition … it all has to get done before a book can make its way out into the world. We could give you something fast, but it wouldn’t be good.

So we choose to make the best books we possibly can, even though right now that means it takes more time than maybe another publisher would. We hope that the wonderful product you get makes up for the wait.

As part of our quest to always improve our creations, we’ve hired Elizabeth Campbell to take over our ebook production! When we started to send out our ebooks as part of our Kickstarter rewards, we got a lengthy email in reply letting us know that, well, the ebooks weren’t the best quality. We took a look at our options, said goodbye to our previous ebook production company, and sought better talent. Thanks to a recommendation we found Campbell, who made new ebooks for both Cthulhurotica and IN SITU, and is now working on the books for FISH and Bibliotheca Fantastica. Which means that once we get those back, we can release them to you!

Campbell says:

I taught myself to code ebooks because I was annoyed with the quality of ebooks available. A badly formatted ebook indicates to the reader that neither the author nor the publisher care about the book. Science Fiction and Fantasy are the core of my reading. If its possible for me to utilize what I’ve learned about coding in order to better SF/F, then I’m a happy camper.

In addition, Campbell spends her free time scanning and create ebooks for “legacy” SF/F writers. Those clients right now are Juliet E. McKenna and Craig Shaw Gardner. (She just finished Jennifer Roberson’s Out Of Prints.) This process takesa very long time, but it’s available to authors who own the rights and whose books are OOP. If you are approaching retirement and who stand to earn money on your lifetime of work as a writer, please contact Campbell to discuss your project.
